A welded mesh born out of necessity, built together with those who live by the sea

In May 2023, when few people were yet talking about the blue crab crisis, a group of mussel farmers from the Goro Lagoon asked us for help in dealing with a dire situation. The blue crab was devouring the mussels and jeopardizing the livelihoods, investments, and futures of entire families.

We listened to their stories and decided to put our expertise as manufacturers of electro-welded wire mesh to good use. Together with those who live by the sea every day, we developed a mesh specifically designed for the lagoon environment: pre-galvanized wire, a structure resistant to blue crab claws, a height suitable for installation on the seabed, and a marine-friendly PVC coating that does not release microplastics and is built to last.

In September 2023, we supplied the first rolls for what was then a pioneering project: the construction of the first enclosures in the lagoon. Today, those enclosures are an essential tool for continuing to cultivate clams and mussels and for safeguarding a historic industry in the Po Delta.

Not all nets are the same: those developed for the marine environment are born from listening, expertise, and collaboration with those who truly know the sea. That is why, even today, our nets installed in 2023 are still in the water and continue to fulfill their purpose.

SIA-MPL is proud of the work carried out quietly, of the trust earned in the field, and of the contribution made to the protection of the lagoon, the environment, and the activities that have been part of this region for centuries.
